Back to the City of Bridges

How I Spent My 2017 Summer Vacation
By Doris Acheampong, Development Assistant

This summer, I went went back ‘home’ to Pittsburgh to spend time with friends I haven’t seen in a while. I call Pittsburgh home because I love the city and lived there for three years. We had a picnic at Ohiopyle, went sightseeing, feasting at my favorite Indian and Turkish restaurants, and shopping at the ‘waterfront’ – a shopping mall center that sits on a land once occupied by the U.S. Steel’s Homestead Steel Works plan. In all it was great seeing and spending quality time with my friends!

The ‘I Am Because We Are’ mural at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. The background design is called Kente, this distinctive woven cloth of West Africa is made in my hometown in Ghana. Intertwined in the Kente cloth are two symbols: Nkonsonkonson, the chain link and Osram ne nsoromma, the moon and the star. These two West African symbols stress the importance of community, love and faith.
