Fun, Fete & Music

How I Spent My Summer Vacation
By Lisa Husseini, VP, Marketing & Communications

This summer I was able to take a quick day trip to the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. Every summer, Charleston turns into an arts destination with at least one concert, ballet, opera, or play occurring each day.

I was only in town for 24 hours but I tried to fit everything I could into that one day. I enjoyed the local cafes and restaurants, browsed a local old bookstore with some extraordinarily cool antique books, and attended a chamber orchestra concert featuring a handful of my friends. The biggest treat of the day was an after-hours half-party half-concert which was held by the festival musicians. These musicians, all of whom are at the top of their field, put on a special concert of unexpected music for each other. Twelve cellists took the stage and performed rock classics. A violinist traded her violin for her voice as she sang jazz standards with a backup band. A fun end to a wonderful trip – and a great reminder that even in the most serious of settings, art is meant to be enjoyed.
